GOVERNMENT on Monday agreed to ratify the protocols or rules governing the operation of the International Seabed Authority, which is located downtown Kingston.

The main objective of the protocol is "to set out the standard privileges and immunities accorded to an international organisation and to officials of the organisation regardless of nationality," information minister, Colin Campbell told reporters.

He told reporters during the weekly briefing following Monday's Cabinet meeting that the Seabed protocol agreement would come into force within 30 days of Jamaica's depositing the instrument of ratification.

In addition to providing the authority with a lawyer, the protocol states the mechanisms to be used to settle disputes.
