THE INTERNATIONAL ARENA
Jamaica continued positive relations with the rest of the world:
- Led in trade negotiations for the Cotonou Agreement to replace LOME V, which provides new trading opportunities for Jamaican businesses
- Jamaica became a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council in January 2000 and has since contributed substantially to its deliberations.
- Signed new protocols for the creation of the CARICOM Single Market and Economy
- Succeeded in lobby for U. S. Cari bbean Basin Trade Partnership Act 2000, which grants expanded access for textile products from the Caribbean Basin countries
- In collaboration with the Mi n i s t ry of Agriculture, secured approval from the European Union to export fish and conch products to Europe
- Conclusion of CARICOM/Dominican Republic Free Trade Agreement
- The removal of the ban on export of ackees to the USA
- Secured Agreement for the purchase of Nigerian oil on concessional terms
- Signed Headquarters Agreement with the International Seabed Authority
