Highest-ever level of expenditure on education as a percentage of GDP in the last fifteen years
- Built and refurbished 47 schools
- Provided computer facilities in an additional 384 schools
- Provided school meals and snacks for over 200,000 students daily and improved the product by supplying locally produced fresh milk
- Increased Early Childhood enrollment to 94% of 4 and 5 year olds
- Revamped the primary school curriculum in support of more integrated learning and universal literacy to prepare all students for the knowledge economy
- Introduced curriculum-based GSAT as the improved terminal primary school examination and placed largest-ever number of students in high schools
- Im p roved performance in CXC English and Mathematics from 33% to 48% and 20% to 39% respectively
- Completed refurbishing and system improvement of 14 Technical High Schools under the Technical High School Development Project
- Enrolled the largest-ever number of trainees under the umbrella of the HEART Trust / NTA in a single year - 31,473 in 1999/2000 (compared with 7,415 in 1989/90)
- Introduced student-friendly loan scheme for tertiary students
- Established computer equipped, Internet - wired resource rooms and library facilities at Mona campus, UWI
- Accredited the Northern Caribbean University, the first-ever private university in Jamaica
- Created the Caribbean Institute of Technology for training computer programmers, and extended the programme to Community Colleges
