POVERTY ALLEVIATION
- Some $20 billion spent on projects under the National Poverty Eradication Programme
- JSIF providing infrastructural support to needy communities:
- $340 million on schools
- $128 million on health centres
- $52.2 million on organisational development and Social Services
- $120.5 million on inner-city youth projects
- $58.5 million on homes for children, the aged and the disabled
- Islandwide Bee-keeping De velopment Project has increased number of bee-keepers from 228 to 1,720
- Rural Electrification Programme - at a cost of J$800 million, provided electricity to 5,771 homes
- The Micro Investment Development Agency (MIDA), providing financing to Community Development Funds, which serve those who cannot access traditional lending institutions
- Under the Jamaica D rugs for the Elderly P rogramme (JADEP) , 110,000 persons registered to access drugs from 150 participating pharmacies
- The Prime Minister's Special Indigent Housing Project, last year allocated $100 million for housing solutions across the island:
- 642 homes built or repaired
- 26 institutions catering to the indigent received funding to effect repairs
- In final stages of establishing a project to address the problem of street children
